This fall we are excited to offer Bizhishig Anishinaabemodaa! From Learners to Speakers, a 30-day online Anishinaabemowin immersion program designed for learners who want to make the transition to speaking. This pilot project is part of a research study funded by SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) and delivered in partnership with the University of Winnipeg.
This fully online immersion program focuses on creating new conversational speakers of Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe/Saulteaux), with a curriculum built around our Manitoba dialect.
The project has two main goals:
Bizhishig Anishinaabemodaa is an intensive program for people who are serious about learning to speak their language. Participants will engage in daily Zoom lessons—designed to build confidence, comprehension, and speaking ability in a supportive and accessible immersion environment.
Participants must be either living in Manitoba currently, or have family connections to a Manitoban community. They will have some knowledge of Anishinaabemowin but not yet be comfortable speaking in the language.
This program might be a good fit if you have taken classes but are still not able to:
You do not need knowledge of grammar, the double-vowel writing system, or to have a large vocabulary yet. We will be focusing on the conversational
speech we need for our daily lives, so that we can work toward a long-term goal of living in our language.
Intake opens in Fall 2025.
Program details, including application information and start dates, will be shared closer to that time.
